Managing a problem-CEFR

Dear Karl,

Judy called me a few days ago to talk about some of the problems she was having, and because you are in charge of Judy's project team, I thought I'd let you know what was stated. 

Although Judy loves working with you and the team and finds the project to be extremely interesting, I believe she is having trouble seeing the larger picture and may be feeling a little lost. She seemed to have had a good deal of liberty to do the duties you assigned her, and of course, this kind of delegating is normal in your branch.However, I think that in her Tokyo office, she is accustomed to a little bit more managerial direction and guidance and finds this global project to be pretty intimidating. 

When I questioned her about reaching her deadlines, she said that because the project's timeframe had recently changed, her goalposts had been moved, and she didn't really know why this had happened. We can assume that she may be feeling a little stretched given the fact that she is also dealing with concurrent deadlines from her department in Tokyo.

In the future, I wondered whether we could help Judy by giving her more guidance when setting her duties, at least until she learns the ropes and becomes accustomed to working independently. She might also appreciate you explaining to her how her position on the team fits into the big picture. Do you think it would be a good idea to briefly discuss the team's goals and each team member's goals during your next team meeting so that everyone, including Judy, is reminded of the overall objective?

Additionally, I was considering that it could be beneficial to periodically check in with her to make sure she is aware of any modifications to the general strategy. I'll write to her manager in the Tokyo office in the interim to find out whether they are aware of the deadlines you've given her and to ask if they can in any way review her responsibilities and coordinate her tasks so that she doesn't feel like she is continuously being pulled in two directions.

Judy is a very diligent worker who is ready to make a great contribution to the team. Personally, I believe she has great potential and, with the right mentoring, will contribute significantly to our worldwide efforts. I'm interested in hearing your opinions on the subject and am open to any recommendations about how we could support Judy more effectively to make her time on the team go more smoothly.
