Sustainable supermarkets-CEFR

Read an article about how some supermarkets have become more environmentally friendly to practise and improve your reading skills.
Definition-

Are you a proficient (CEFR level C1) English learner? You can practise reading in this part to improve your comprehension of lengthy, complicated books that cover a wide range of topics, some of which may be unfamiliar. Specialized articles, biographies, and summaries are examples of texts.

Example-

Over the past ten years, some large grocery chains have faced criticism for alleged unethical behaviour. They have a negative impact on our environment since they have wasted a lot of food, underpaid their suppliers, and used too much plastic in their packaging.

However, grocers and retailers are beginning to pay attention. Some of the biggest UK supermarkets have joined a pact vowing to reform packaging and reduce plastic waste in response to growing public outrage over the massive volumes of plastic trash produced by plastic packaging.Supermarkets are starting to accept some responsibility for the role they play in contributing to the harm to our environment, with one major supermarket announcing their plan to eliminate all plastic packaging in their own-brand products by 2023. They have pledged to reuse, recycle, or compost all plastic waste by 2025.

Part supermarkets are giving away some of their excess food as a response to complaints about food waste. However, charities believe they are only able to access 2% of the leftover food in supermarkets, so this hardly seems to be a solution. Some claim that grocery stores are not doing nearly enough. When asked for exact food waste statistics, the majority of supermarkets operate in secrecy. Without greater transparency, it is challenging to develop a methodical strategy for preventing waste and redistributing excess food.

Smaller businesses are now taking matters into their own hands and providing customers with a greener, more eco-friendly option. Recently opened plastic-free stores like Original Unverpakt in Berlin and Bulk Market in London encourage consumers to bring their own containers or biodegradable bags.Farmdrop, an online supermarket, delivers fresh produce from nearby farms to its clients every day via electric cars, eliminating the need for massive storage and the possibility of a significant food excess while giving farmers the majority of the retail price.

Without a question, there is more work to be done to reduce both food and plastic waste. However, it's possible that the larger supermarkets may draw ideas from these smaller grocery stores and gradually work towards a more sustainable future for all of us.
