  •   Why prioritising team development is essential?

The objective of team development is for each team-mate to become stronger. The advantages of team development are countless. In addition to boosting employees' productive capacity, it also increases motivation, promotes cooperation, and constructs employee trust and regard.

Nowadays, individuals apply for jobs with a good work environment. An environment where people around them are friendly and cooperative. When a team is well developed and communal, individuals become well connected and start working better.

  •   How to develop a team properly?

Good team leaders are aware of the fact that all individuals are as good as each other. After all, they are all hired through the same process, and each has checked the required boxes. It is why leaders feel the need to develop their brigades.

A leader puts the members through five essential stages to achieve a good team by giving them a specific team-building task. They are-

  1. Initiating Stage
  2. Combative Stage
  3. Amalgamation Stage
  4. Execution Stage
  5. Recessing stage

Let's dig deeper into each of the above stages.

1.     INITIATING STAGE: 

The initiating phase includes directions given by the team leader that acts as a jump start for members to get to know each other. At this stage, anxiety is high, and people seek advice and command. You surely know that someone with power, such as a leader, will take control. Team members ask questions like, "What does the unit offer me?" "What do you expect from me?" Most interactions are pleasant when members get to know each other.

2.     COMBATIVE STAGE:

The combative level is a rough and vital stage to pass through. It is a duration marked by arguments and rivalry as individual personalities emerge after the team leader presents everyone with a task. A team's overall performance can be lower on this level as strength goes into unproductive activities like quarrelling. Members can also disagree on team goals and sometimes together agree to disagree. Individuals need to conquer obstacles like; character contrasts and conflicts to surpass this stage. Teams can get slowed down on this level, and failure to cope with problems can bring about long-term problems.

 

3.     AMALGAMATION STAGE:

After the team survives the combative stage, the conflict is resolved, and some level of unity emerges. The amalgamation phase creates like-mindedness in accepting the thoughts of the leader. By this point, the role of each member is evident. Differences in interpersonal connections begin to fade, resulting in the appearance of a sense of unity and accordance. This phase improves team performance as members learn to work together and focus on the team's goals. However, amicability is volatile, and the team may return to the aggressive stage if disagreements resurface.

 

4.     EXECUTION STAGE 

In the execution stage, unanimity and teamwork have been well-built. The team is wise, in order, and operating cordially. There is a straightforward and sturdy layout, and individuals are determined to complete the task. Though crises and disagreements arise, the team members find a solution for them positively.

 

5.     RECESSING STAGE:

After completing the task, we proceed into the last stage of group development, the recessing stage. Here, team members get ready to bid adieu. The ultimate agenda of the recessing stage is to attain a sense of closure and dismiss optimistically. Team members require a moment to meditate on their contribution and development. It is also necessary to identify the growth, improvement, and accomplishments of the team as a whole.

  •  There is a tendency for team members to feel sad at the end when the group dissolves. Here is when the team leader needs to motivate them and make them aware of the fact that there are more such opportunities to come where they will be able to form new connections and be exposed to fresh perspectives.
