The Basic Structure of IELTS Academic Writing Task 1

IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic requires you to write at least 150 words in response to a graph, table, chart or process. You will be presented with factual information and asked to select and report the main features of the data in under 20 minutes.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 comprises of two parts. 

  • In the first part, you need to describe a graph, table, chart or diagram. You will be given 20 minutes for this task. 
  • In the second part, you need to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You will be given 40 minutes for this task.

The basic structure of an IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 is as follows:

1. Introduce the graph

3. Interpret the data

4. Summarize the main points

5. Conclude your essay
