Where do we use Conjunctions?

We use conjunctions all the time in everyday speech and writing, but where do we use them?
Definition:

Conjunctions are words that join together other words, phrases, or clauses. 

Where are conjunctions used?

They can be used to connect ideas, contrast information, or simply make a sentence sound more complete.

Here are some examples of where conjunctions are used:

  1. Joining two clauses
  • I am studying Hindi and Sanskrit
  • I like football and hockey
  • I love to sing and dance
  • Are you eating and then going back home?
  • I’m studying English and Spanish
  1. Contras 
  • We have a lot in common, but she’s very different from me. (contrasting information)
  • He’s lazy and never cleans his room. (joining two adjectives)

There are many different types of conjunctions, each serving a different purpose. The most common conjunctions are and, but, or, so, yet, and nor.

And is used to join two or more ideas that are similar.

But is used to contrast two ideas.

Or is used to present two or more options.

So is used to show the result of an action.

Yet is used to present two contrasting ideas.

Nor is used to present two contrasting ideas using Negative words.

Conjunctions are a vital part of language and we use them all the time, often without even realizing it!
