grammar : Figures of Speech

In common usage, a figure of speech is the opposite of a literal expression.

A figure of speech is a change from the ordinary use of words to enhance their effectiveness. As it has a rhetorical effect, it is sometimes referred to as a rhetorical figure. It alters a statement's actual essence or customary usage in order to get the desired impact. In both written and spoken communication, it typically emphasizes, embellishes, or clarifies language. Typically, it is categorized into many schemes.

A scheme is a regular pattern or succession of words. To produce the desired result, we typically carry out the following four simple operations:

Operations

  • Repetition, expansion, or superabundance are other terms for the addition.
  • Other terms for an omission include subtraction, abridgment, or lack.
  • Transferring is another name for transposition.
  • Switching, interchange, substitution, or transmutation are additional terms for the permutation.
Uses-

Figure of Speech deepens the sentence, brings out the beauty of the text, and generates curiosity in the reader. It gives the writer's words more vitality. The use of figures of speech not only reveals the author's intention but also explains why he chose certain words. It gives the text flavor and greatly improves the reader's enjoyment of it.

Example of all four figure of speeches-

1- OXymoron- This is the only option.

2- Metaphor- He is a shining star.

3- Simile- She is beautiful like a rose.

4- Hyperbole- The work was done terribly well.
