Examples of paradox in literature

Orwell is not questioning mathematical rules; rather, he is pointing out that "equality" has become meaningless in the unfair society of the farm.‍

There are many different levels of paradox, from clever one-liners to the entire storyline of a novel.

  1. The whole plot of Joseph Heller's 1961 book Catch 22 is built on a literary paradox, and it also includes several other paradoxes.
  2. Only an insane guy would want to fly planes in a war, yet only a sane man can, according to one of the book's paradoxes. Therefore, if one of the characters wishes to go to war, it follows that he is insane and cannot. But if he declines to fight, that proves he is sane and will not be sent.
  3. Oscar Wilde is renowned for his contradictions in a single phrase. He writes things like these in The Importance of Being Earnest, which was originally staged in 1895.
  4. ‘To be natural is such a very difficult pose to keep up’, Wilde subtly and amusingly challenges society standards via contradiction. Wilde's character acknowledges that seeming "natural" in his culture is an artificial performance with this phrase.
  5. George Orwell likewise made comments on the insanity of his political era using paradoxical words. He stated: "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others" in his 1945 book Animal Farm. One object cannot logically be "more equal" than another since that would negate the purpose of equality. However, Orwell is not questioning mathematical rules; rather, he is pointing out that "equality" has become meaningless in the unfair society of the farm.
