How are modifiers structured?

A modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that modifies—that is, gives information about—another word in the same sentence. For example, in the following sentence, the word "burger" is modified by the word "vegetarian": Example: I'm going to the Saturn Café for a vegetarian burger.
Definition

Modifiers are often positioned directly next to the noun they are modifying.

  1. This often denotes just before or after the noun:

  • My pomeranian dog is always by my side.
  • That guy ordered a pizza without cheese.

  1. This is also accurate when they're changing an adjective or verb:

  • He bought dark blue shoes.
  • Students listened carefully to the lecture.

  1. It can be difficult for a reader or listener to understand a statement when a modifier isn't in this location. It's called a misplaced modifier in this case. Here are some instances of inappropriately used modifiers:

  • They bought a car for my sister they call Rose.
  • We built a house for them out of brick.

Which character is Rose in the first clause? Is it the car or the sister? Did they run out of bricks in the second? Did we use bricks to construct a house? Did they dwell in bricks before?

The identical two statements are presented below with the modifiers in the appropriate places:

  • For my sister, they bought an automobile that they call Rose.
  • For them, we built a brick home.
