What are filler words

whether we're speaking in casual conversation or giving a presentation. But what are filler words, exactly?
Definition
  • Filler words are words or sounds that we use to fill up space in our speech. They don't add any meaning to what we're saying, but we often use them without realizing it.
  • Some common filler words are "um," "ah," "like," "you know," and "I mean." We often use these words to buy ourselves some time to think about what we want to say next. Other times, we use them to fill up space when we're not sure what to say.
  • While filler words are perfectly normal and harmless, they can be a problem if we use them too often.
  • If we use filler words too much, it can make us sound nervous or unsure of ourselves. It can also make it hard for people to understand what we're saying.

How to reduce their usage?

If you're worried about using too many filler words, there are a few things you can do to cut down on their use.

  1. First, take a moment to think about what you want to say before you speak. This will help you avoid using filler words to buy yourself time to think.
  2. Second, slow down your speech. This will help you focus on each word you're saying, and it will also make it less likely that you'll use filler words.
  3. Finally, pay attention to how often you use filler words. If you catch yourself using them too much, make a conscious effort to cut down on their use. With a little practice, you'll be able to speak more confidently and clearly - without relying on filler words.
