What is Compound Sentences?

Learn all about compound sentences, including examples of how they’re used in writing, their punctuation rules, and more.
Definition

-Compound sentences are one of the most important tools in a writer's arsenal. They're versatile, they can be used to add emphasis or change the tone of a sentence, and they can make writing more interesting and complex.

-A compound sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses -that is, clauses that could stand alone as separate sentences.

-These clauses are joined together with a conjunction (like and, but, or, so, yet, etc.), a semicolon, or a comma and a conjunction.

Examples of compound sentences

He wanted to go to the beach, but she wanted to go to the mountains.
