Simple past tenses describe completed activities that take place in the past. In other words, they start and end in the past. 

Simple past tense structure:

Write----wrote

Paint---painted

Study-----studied

Play----played

Read-----read

Ask-----asked

Cry---cried

Examples:

1. He played yesterday

2. I wrote the letter

3. He asked the teacher few questions

4. John spoke to me yesterday

5. Few days ago, Tyler was here

Using the Simple Past Tense

1. Making statements

When making a statement, you can use the following word order:

 Subject + verb

·         The boy sang the song beautifully.

·         The burglar used the fire escape.

2. The Negative Version

If you need the negative version, you can use the following word order:

Did not + base form of verb

·         The boy did not sing beautifully.

(We could have used "didn't" instead of "did not.")

·         The burglar did not use the fire escape.

3. The Question Version

If you need to ask a question, you can use the following word order for a yes/no question:

 Subject + verb + base form of verb 

·         Did the boy sing beautifully?

·         Did the burglar use the fire escape?
