Nouns & Kinds | Class 5 | SpeakoJunior

A noun is a word that names something, such as a person, place, thing, or idea. In a sentence, nouns can play the role of subject, direct object, indirect object, subject complement, object complement, appositive, or modifier. Some noun examples include: cat. bicycle.

Kinds of Noun

Noun can be divided into five following groups:

  • Common Noun
  • Proper Noun
  • Abstract Noun
  • Collective Noun
  • Material Noun

Common Noun

A common noun is a term for a person, place, or thing. The term 'boy' refers to all boys (Rakesh, Raju, Amit, Rajesh, Mayank, etc.) but does not relate to any specific boy. As a result, the term 'boy' is used frequently. Similarly, the term 'city' refers to any city in the world (Delhi, Patna, Japan, New York, etc.) but does not specify a specific city. Thus, 'city' is a common noun. (An article must come before a singular common noun.)

Proper Noun.

A proper noun is a name given to a particular person, place, or thing.

For example, Rakesh and Amit are boys' names; Delhi is a city; the Taj Mahal is a building; the Ganga is a river; and Mt Everest is a mountain range.

Abstract Noun

An abstract noun is a word for anything that we can think of rather than something we can see or touch. They are the titles given to certain qualities, feelings, states, or actions. Charity is an abstract term since it refers to a trait that cannot be seen but can only be understood through a person's acts or behavioural patterns.
