Definition-

Are you a CEFR level B1 intermediate English learner? This section provides writing exercises to help you create short, coherent texts about known subjects that you find interesting. Forum posts, reviews, messages, brief articles, and emails are examples of texts.

How to write?
  • Give a brief description of the chart in the first paragraph, describing what it represents, to whom it applies, and when.
  • Be specific when describing graphic data. Mention the category and number, for example. In 2017, online video streaming was the most widely used format. $9.8 billion was spent by US consumers.
  • A trend is a long-term change. Focus on what is increasing or decreasing in comparison to a previous period when describing trends, for instance:... which was a rise of 32% from the prior year.
  • If multiple categories exhibit the same pattern, discuss them all at once, like in the case of customers eschewing the chart's three physical formats.
  • Indicate the measurement units, for example. $9.8 billion was spent by US consumers.
  • There are numerous up and down trending verbs that can also be used as nouns, including as Spending decreased by 21% = There was a 21% decrease in spending. (You may use % or %, but use consistency.)
  • Create a summary. Describe the main takeaways from the data.

Example-

The graph displays the revenue from sales of various home video entertainment formats in the United States in 2017. Additionally, it displays the percentage difference from the prior year.

In 2017, online video streaming was the most widely used format. US customers paid $9.8 billion, a 32% increase over the prior year, on services like Netflix. This made up over half of what the typical American spent on home video entertainment.

The three physical formats in the chart were losing customers at the same time. In 2017, DVD and Blu-ray sales decreased by 14% over the course of a year to $4.5 billion, and rent-by-post revenues fell by 20% to $0.5 billion. The biggest drop in expenditure was at DVD rental stores, where it decreased by 21% to barely $0.4 billion.

Spending on physical video formats overall was clearly on the decline as they all had relatively modest sales and were all in decline. The tendency toward paying for streaming, though, was going higher.
